Grand Rounds
We have protected time for Grand Rounds every Thursday, 9AM-2PM. Currently, we alternate between in-person and virtual Grand Rounds every week. Our didactics consist of a mix of lectures from our own attendings, guest lecturers, and residents. We also have weekly, case-based learning using Foundations of Emergency Medicine (FOEM), which involves small group sessions for each PGY level. Each year, our didactics cover all of the core content of emergency medicine through FOEM, supplemental reading, and lectures so that our residents are well equipped for practice after residency. Additionally, we incorporate procedure days, cadaver lab, simulation lab, and themed-days such as EMS, wilderness medicine and disaster medicine to supplement resident education.
Our residents also participate in several other educational events throughout the year, such as the WSU quarterly toxicology grand rounds, the annual Detroit Trauma Symposium, CPC in the D, Detroit Ultrasound Symposium, and SonoWars.
Journal Club
Here at Sinai-Grace, our journal clubs are both educational and part of our wellness. Each month a third year resident partners up with one of our awesome attendings to host a journal club. These events include an engaging and educational discussion about journal articles that have direct applications to our practice of emergency medicine. Our journal clubs are hosted at a variety of locations throughout Detroit and the surrounding area, ranging from breweries to restaurants, and sometimes even at our attendings’ homes. Great food, great drinks, and great company to complement an educational journal discussion is guaranteed no matter where we go!
Conferences
During second year, your whole residency class will travel together to attend either SAEM or CORD, and in your third year you all will travel again to attend ACEP. These conferences offer opportunities for education, networking and quality time spent with your co-residents. The cost associated with traveling to and attending these conferences is covered within your yearly academic stipend. Additionally, you have the freedom and program support to travel to any conference where your work has been accepted and the associated cost will be covered by the residency.
Scholary Activities
Quality improvement and scholarly projects are ACGME requirements of our program. At Sinai Grace, we are lucky to have supportive attendings who help facilitate these projects. We have the freedom to choose our projects based on our own interests and goals. Our faculty not only serve as a source of mentorship and guidance, but also as connections to the Wayne State University Department of Emergency Medicine as a whole. WSU-EM consistently ranks in the top 15 in NIH research funding each year. Examples of scholarly projects include case reports, participation at CPC in the D, poster presentations, or even research projects. Examples of QI projects include creation of admission flow-sheet, pharmacy curriculum, updated diagram for antibiotic recommendations, and updating the intern manual. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in the Continued Quality Improvement (CQI) committee as well.
