Ultrasound
As a resident, you will have ample exposure to ultrasound. We have an ‘ultrasound friendly’ culture, which means that the use of ultrasound is encouraged and often used in our medical decision making. We utilize Q-path, which allows ultrasound faculty to review all of our images and make suggestions for improvement. We also participate in SonoWARs with the other EM residencies in Detroit, which is a friendly (but competitive) ultrasound and wilderness medicine competition. While ultrasound education is already integrated into our curriculum, residents with further interest can do an additional elective during their 2nd or 3rd year of residency. DMC trains 3 fellows each year, with one on-site at Sinai-Grace.
EMS
Residents with interest in EMS can participate in an EMS elective during your residency training. During this time, you will go on ‘ride alongs’ with Detroit EMS. Additionally, there are several opportunities to participate in event medicine throughout the year, including the Detroit Grand Prix and the Detroit Free Press Marathon. We have EMS fellowship-trained faculty at Sinai-Grace that can provide mentorship for residents interested in pursuing fellowship. DMC trains 1 fellow each year.
Global Health
Residents can participate in the Global Health & Equity (GLUE) program through Wayne State University. This two-year seminar series meets monthly from August through May with a goal to “unify the various global health silos to drive transformative solutions to better impact local and international health outcomes.” The main focus is learning how to provide and care for underserved and vulnerable populations. Residents complete a capstone project at the end of the second year, and completion of the course results in a GLUE Scholar Certificate of Completion. WSU Department of Emergency Medicine has a Global and Urban Emergency Medicine Fellowship, with several involved faculty working at SGH to provide mentorship for interested residents. DMC trains 1-2 fellows each year.
Toxicology
We have an engaging Toxicology program with several fellowship-trained attendings on staff. Residents are exposed to longitudinal toxicology education through quarterly tox grand rounds as well as a deeper dive during the toxicology rotation. Residents with further interest in toxicology can do additional electives during PGY2 or PGY3, and have several attendings on staff at SGH to provide mentorship. DMC trains 1 fellow each year.
SGH residents have ample exposure to pediatric patients at SGH supplemented by dedicated rotations at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan. CHM is our region’s pediatric tertiary-care center, which offers a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship. This hospital cares for approximately 100,000 patients per year and is a Level-1 pediatric trauma center and certified burn center. You will work side-by-side with the pediatric EM fellows during your total of 8 weeks at CHM ED. CHM trains 4 fellows each year.
Medical Education
As a senior resident, you will work alongside medical students and rotating residents in other specialties to facilitate their learning. You will also manage your own MICU team with two interns as learners. Throughout your residency, you will have multiple opportunities to present lectures during grand rounds. The medical education fellowship is for those interested in pursing a career in academic emergency medicine, with focus on learning theories, medical education research, and how to assess learners and provide appropriate feedback. DMC trains 1 fellow each year.
Sports Medicine
SGH has several sports medicine fellowship-trained attendings that provide education on shift as well as during our grand rounds. Additionally, our interns complete a three week rotation in sports medicine. The one year sports medicine fellowship involves primary care sports faculty, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, radiologists and specialists in a variety of fields. DMC trains 2 fellows each year.
